Introduction to Australia: the land of the kangaroos
Australia, also known as the Land of Oz or the Island-Continent, is located in the southern hemisphere of our planet. Australia is the only country in the world that is also a continent!
In terms of history, it was populated by Aborigines for more than 50,000 years. Northern fishermen and Dutch sailors then frequented the coasts until 1770, then the East was claimed by a British fleet in 1788. Six other autonomous colonies were formed between the 1800s and 1900s, eventually forming the country of Australia, also known as the Commonwealth of Australia. The Aborigines were not spared, and were pushed back to the west of the country.
Australia is home to about 24 million people from all over the world, including 600,000 Aboriginal people.
More than three-quarters of Australia's people have European roots. This is due to the large immigration of the European population, which arrived after the Second World War.
It has also welcomed with open arms various peoples from the Middle East and Asia. Today it offers a sublime melting pot of different cultures.
